My Notes from Cultural Awareness Training
Here are some notes I took from mandatory cultural awareness "training" I took last week, courtesy of my employer.
It might be a bit hard to read, so here's what the material says, and what I wrote is in italics:
Diversity is... mandated
Cultural competency is... not bringing ham sandwiches to work
Cultural Diversity is... discriminating against white males
Workforce Diversity is... affirmative action
To be fair though, the training did not mention any specifics on what to do or not do around people of specific cultures. Rather, the training focused on how to deal with cultural differences, or something like that. I didn't pay much attention.
I work for a company that has more than 100,000 employees. This training is 2 hours long for regular peons, and 4 hours long for managers. We got paid to attend training, which means my company spent millions of dollars for something that will probably scarcely be applied.
I'm so glad I work for a mom and pop company, where we don't have to attend these things. My dad works for the State Government and is always attending "diversity" training sessions. He says they are such a waste of time!
I'm not sure if you are a fan of The Office, but they have an episode called "Diversity Day" that's just hysterical. My dad says it's so funny because it's so true.
