Assorted Produce!

We have an abundance of produce! There are a couple of things to mention about this picture though.

Our first pickup, plus other stuff
One thing I forgot to mention about our trip to grandmother's is that we got lots of fruit on the way home. 'Tis the season for most fruits, and so we looked up a number of u-pick farms on PickYourOwn.org before we left (g-ma does not have a computer). We bought the peaches and watermelon at a roadside produce stand in a tiny town called Atkinson. There were many more peaches, but they don't last long around here, you know. The only reason there are as many left is because there have been rumblings and rumors of peach muffins.

We bought 5 pounds of pre-picked blueberries directly from a blueberry farm. They are, unfortunately, pesticide-sprayed. I should've asked on the phone, but instead I asked as I paid. I didn't feel like snatching my money back and walking out. But 5 pounds for $10? Much better than what you'd get at the grocery stores, and just as good. The small container of blueberries is from our CSA, and they are certified organic. Plans? Eat some, freeze most, take them out as necessary to make blueberry muffins, blueberry pancakes, blueberry smoothies, blueberry cobbler, blueberry pie....

Next to the blueberries is about a gallon of blackberries, picked ourselves, for $12. They have not been sprayed with pesticides, and unless someone barges in and sprays down our refrigerator contents, will stay that way. We are planning on making blackberry jelly out of all these, since it turned out superb last year.

As mentioned last week, we joined a CSA. Today was our first pickup. Starting from the left, and excluding produce that is not from the CSA:
Fennel, blueberries, basil, canary melon (never heard of it, hope it's good), eggplant, 8-ball squash, leek, cucumber, potatoes, some sort of bean, and bell pepper.

There is supposedly some sort of menu plan that utilizes everything here, but I lack the qualifications (chromosome) to write about such a thing.

CSA's are such a nifty thing. I'm glad you found one.

Ha! You'll have to tell my fiance that his lack of an extra X chromosome (or is it perhaps his Y chromosome) somehow precludes him from menu planning. Bet he'd disagree. Hmmmm, I wonder what he's making me for dinner? :)
