Small Personal Experience with non-Free Market
First, let me begin by saying that this episode could've been avoided if I had remembered my stinkin' badge this morning. I will add that I DESPISE forgetting my badge!!!
But the fact of the matter is that I forgot my badge this morning, not realizing it until I had gotten to the campus entrance. By some twist of regulations, the temporary badge I get from the front gate does not actually get me into my work area. I have to get a special badge to get access there. So it's about 6:30 and I'm waiting by the security desk. I decide to get up and park my car in a good spot, figuring that someone would be there by 6:45, which is when the desk is supposed to open.
Of course, you know what happens. 6:45 comes and goes. 7AM arrives, and I decide that I've had enough; I'll just call someone in my work area and have them let me in. (please note that 30 minutes of my time have been wasted doing nothing) After getting in, I send an e-mail to the security desk, asking if they would please let me know when they're there. I finally get an e-mail around 7:22, about a good 40 minutes later than they were supposed to be open.
I said all that to complain about the possible woes of a non-free market system. If this had been a consumer issue, I would place this particular "vendor" at the bottom of my go-to list. Unless I couldn't help it, I would never purchase this "vendor's" services again.* But since there is only ONE of these security desks, I have no choice but to go back for their services, and there will be no compensation or reprimands.
* - Obligatory concessions given for things like traffic jams or personal emergencies.
